About Me

My photo
Folk & Jazz fan, specialising in vinyl restoration. Although I would prefer to only post albums that I have paid for, or those of close friends, I am open to suggestions and offers of rare Folk items that need tender care and restoration, provided the supplier has the right of ownership of the physical item. NOT JUST an MP3 COPY of it. To give you an idea, I am prepared to restore vinyl belonging to another person, IF I receive a decent quality scan of the front, back and any relevant information that comes with the LP, preferably at least 2400 by 2400 quality, (600DPI scans for back) along with the sound files in FLAC format as waves are a bit too large to transfer. Then I will check their suitability for restoration. I try to maintain the requirement for a decent set of scans for each item, where possible, as I feel the music is incomplete without it. Sometimes this is just not possible as a lot of my stock came from broadcasting organisations that had their own heavy card sleeves, with information relevant to their prime function, that of providing the disc-jockies with basic details to pass on to listeners. I do wonder what happened to all the original artwork?

* * * * New layout for BLOG * * * *

As you will notice, I'm trying one of the new layouts to make things easier to read, however some of the text colours that suited the old dark background are far from ideal with this light one, so over the course of the next few days/weeks I will be reviewing the whole blog and making changes as needed.

Tip: If you cannot read some text in its original colours, try highlighting it as you would for Copy/Paste.

Some 50's Light Jazz "Toots Thielemans THE SOUND OF (1955)"

This is about the oldest "Toots" album I have found so far, considering it's age the quality is really quite good, though it does require quite a lot of attention to background noise and scratches.. I've tried to retain as much of the original detail as possible and minimised the filtering.  This album did not warrant my usual 320k treatment, but rather than make a special lower bit rate copy for the blog I will upload the 320k version.

I have now completed the restoration,  however I have just discovered that the tracks on this vinyl have been re-issued for a second time, this time in their entirety along with the tracks from another Toots album "Timeout for Toots" that is already presented HERE

Normally in this situation I would withdraw a listing, but in this case since the original is well past the 50 year old original copyright date I will continue to process and restore this album. For those interested in the double album CD, you can find reference to it, and optionally purchase it HERE

I can highly recommend this CD, although it has obviously been sourced from original vinyl, not master tapes, the clean up job has been well done, my only reservations being a slight lack of bass on the "Timeout" content compared to my rip of an original Decca vinyl DL9204.

Tracks on the album:

1.   On The Alamo
2.   Don’t Be That Way
3.   I Put All The Eggs In One Basket
4.   Sophisticated Lady
5.   Scotch On The Rocks
6.   I Let A Song Go Out Of My Heart
7.   Stars Fell Of Alabama
8.   Diga Diga Doo
9.   So Rare
10. Skylark
11. Sonny Boy
12. Cocktails For Two

Quality Issues:
The source LP had some bad skips on track 11 (Sonny Boy), this was repaired by extracting a section from the Giants of Jazz album. This track also has a rather strange corruption later on that appears on both the LP and the CD. I can only assume that my source of this track had already found a problem and likewise used the CD track as the corruption sounds like a sudden burst at a different sample rate, not something you would expect from an analogue master tape.

I can now confirm this burst of what sounds like "Chipmunk" harmonica playing is also on the new CD, so one must form one of two conclusions here: It was on the original master, or my copy and the copy for the new CD came from the same source. These comments do not refer to the skips first mentioned, these are only on my copy, and have been corrected as described above.

*** For those that wondered ***

I am still here, very busy with other projects, some jazz is coming up, but folk, specially the old TOPIC stuff is getting very thin on the ground, so many have been either completely or partially re-issued which is a good thing, a number I have already completed or were near completion, have had significant issues, so they get put back in the archive for listening only.

Comments made are STILL not being addressed to the relevant blog entry, so some are getting missed, I am NOT ignoring you, in fact today I spent hours reviewing old comments and found some I never replied to, mainly because when you moderate a comment,  IF it is not referenced to a particular posting, it will effectively vanish.
